Intermittent catheterization is the preferred treatment of LUTS involving voiding problems1-3. However, sometimes pharmacological treatment can be considered, alone or in combination with intermittent catheterization.
Intermittent catheterization is the second best way to urinate, the way that mimics the natural way. It’s an easy technique to learn and can be practiced everywhere. It helps you to completely empty your bladder and puts you in control of your own well-being. At the very least you will get a better night’s sleep, if you happen to be one of all those men that have to visit the toilet one or several times per night.
In average you empty your bladder 1.800 times per year. In 50 years it makes 90.000 times, with or without catheter. Every catheterization causes strain on the urethra, which over time might add up and become a real complication. A low friction catheter surface is of outmost important already from the very start.
